Initially established in 1963 as the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the African Union (AU) was born in September 1999 after the Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African Unity issued the Sirte Declaration. The aim of the AU is to support regional integration in Africa, strengthening its role in the global economy as well as addressing key social, environmental, political and economic issues that affect the African continent.
